  • Seiko’s Cal.5606 was the entry level day/date variant of the Cal.56xx series of movements. The movement was entirely novel and an original design for Seiko. This was a time in which functionality was being added while miniaturization was also desired. The Cal.56xx may also be understood a modernizing moment for Seiko. Lord Marvel was out, Lord Matic was in. Automatics were to be integrated in novel ways, not grafted on. Seiko went on to produce a sizeable production run of the Lord Matic Cal.5606 spanning 10 years, in countless case shapes along with various hands and dials. Lord Matic Cal.5606 are not what you would consider rare. What is exceedingly rare is a +50 year old watch that is in this good of condition with a new old stock faceted crystal. These faceted crystals are no longer produced and finding new old stock is becoming very difficult with many going for more than the price of the watch, if they can be had at all The original bracelet and clasp are along with the case are brushed. While the brushing is still very bright as as well as the polished sides, the case has it’s share of dings and scratches. The long stick hands and greet circular gradient sunburst dial is near perfect. In combination with the faceted crystal, this watch is something special and will only become exceedingly harder to find.

Functionally this could be an everyday watch; its automatic, has a day/date function and is quite comfortable on wrist. However its rarity and unique styling isn’t as versatile as a classic white or black dial oyster case watch. Personally this one would be for special occasions, maybe a weekend outing, or the odd mid-week wear to the office, just to keep things interesting. As far as sizing goes, it is fairly compact as most Cal.56 watches are, how were the crystal is quite thick, in addition to the screw-down crown, it wares a bit bitter than other vintage watches of the 70s.
