  • Seiko’s Cal.5606 was the entry level day/date variant of the Cal.56xx series of movements. The movement was entirely novel and an original design for Seiko. This was a time in which functionality was being added while miniaturization was also desired. The Cal.56xx may also be understood a modernizing moment for Seiko. Lord Marvel was out, Lord Matic was in. Automatics were to be integrated in novel ways, not grafted on. Seiko went on to produce a sizeable production run of the Lord Matic Cal.5606 spanning 8-10 years(there are early and late example that fall outside of the technical productions window), in countless case shapes along with various hands and dials. Lord Matic Cal.5606 are not what you would consider rare, including the monocoque 7000 case. However what is rare among 7000 case Lord Matics is the charcoal dial variant. Typically white or solid gold plated, the “black” watches were commonly associated, during the 50s, 60s and 70s, with military or utilitarian watches like diver’s watches. This particular example is in very decent conditions. The dial has some scrapes and is chipped between the 5 and 6 o’clock, however the glossy varnish looks nice under the new old stock acrylic crystal and the printing is sharp and entirely intact. The hands are also a bit banged up as is the case and bezel. However the movement runs very well and the overall piece, in total, is quite charming. The leather strap is hand made, double ply with a black backing. Its soft and will break in as veg tanned leather does.

This is a very functional watch, with a day and date, and hand winding, hacking making it an excellent daily wearer. The black dial can be dressed up or down and the case is low profile. As far as sizing, it is broad and flat as monocoque cases tend to be. It wears like a cushion case however the shape is more angular giving it a more contemporary look - a very “grammar of design” piece.
