The Q series watches was Seiko’s first true consumer quartz watch line. Prior to the QR, QT, and QZ watches, Seiko had produced the world’s first generation quartz watches in the caliber 35, 38 and 39 movements based “SQ” watches. While the SQ were some of the most expensive watches available at the time, the second generation Q series were meant to be more mass market friendly. They were still very expensive at the time and competed with the top of the line mechanical watches of the era, not only in cost but in fit and finish. This particular model is the later QZ which hung around longer than the QT and QR watches. The dial is near perfect and has a diamond dust finish reads like fine white sand and gives of a slight sparkle in certain light. The hands are also in excellent condition. The calendar has three options for day of the week - english, kanji and all blue english(pictured) instead of the standard blue for saturday. The case is robust and has its share of dings but the top brushing is clean and refinished. The sides are bright. The bracelet is not original but fits the watch well and looks as if it is meant for the watch. These old quartz watches feel very luxurious on the wrist and the build quality is top notch.
This is an excellent every day watch as you never have to keep it wound. It has a day and date calendar which is very practical for the work week but its also a dressy enough watch that it could well be paired with a suit and tie. Early quartz watches tend to be fairly bulky but also having excellent build and finishing making it wear a bit bigger than their mechanical counterparts, especially the one-piece watches of the time.
