  • The Seiko Type II quartz line existed alongside Caliber 38, the first flagship consumer quartz line, and the Caliber 48 series during the mid to late 70s. The Caliber 46 movements were considered a lower grade, and while they retained hacking and a day/date complication the accuracy and finish of the movement were not at the level of the first King and Grand Quartz. What did stand apart and made these Type II watches special were the hands and dials. And generally how creative Seiko was with the styling of the Type II. While the Cal.38 and Cal.48, along most of the line, were fairly conservative, this Cal.46 Type II has a stunning hand set and dial. On this example they are near perfect. The brown gradient, thick gold hands and markers are very 70s yet retain a kind of timeless cool. It’s also not so common to see a watch producer from before this time fitting gold with a steel case. The mesh bracelet isn’t the bracelet that it came with but it is Seiko, from the 70s, pairs nicely and is very comfortable. The crystal is a low box dome acrylic crystal, fairly unique, and is new old stock.

This Type II, as far as factions goes, would make a great everyday watch. However it may not suit all wardrobes. The case is quite flat for an early quartz and has average dimensions for a vintage watch. The short lug to lug makes it great for someone with small wrist but could suit larger wrists, as its crystal is a bit larger than average for the time, 300mm. It could be dressed up or down, really anything that goes will with gold jewelery would pair well with this particular Type II, a blue or green shirt, genim or cream.
