Seiko 5 was an introductory line, with the Actus moniker purportedly being a portmanteau of Active. While Seiko did release quite a few Sports models, which the line is often associated to, these 5Acuts watches are much dressier despite retaining certain Seiko 5 elements like the recessed 4 o’clock crown, day/date complication and automatic only winding. The additional of the SS branding indicates that this watch has Seconds Setting which we now commonly refer to as Hacking Seconds. This particular example has a very compact cushion case with circular brushing. The case has dings and wear, and has been polished, however the dial takes up so much visual space that it isn’t that noticeable. The dial and hands are near perfect with only some slight tarnishing on the hands. The calendar function for the cal.61 day/date watches are quite unique. There is no second position, rather a 2-stage push to advance day and date. The fist push is the date and a deeper push or second stage push is for the day. Every things works as expected and the crystal is brand new, flat mineral crystal with polished bevel. The bracelet is mesh stainless steel, very clean, with some warping, not noticeable on wrist. The bucket is OEM and branded with 5 Actus. The bucket is rebrushed and looks almost pristine.
This compact automatic-only piece with day and date complication is very comfortable making it suitable for daily wear. It is also very versatile as far as dress goes. It could be paired with a suit or something much more casual, color or monochrome. The very short lug to lug makes it suitable for smaller wrists, however it has an almost 38mm case width which is on the larger side for vintage watches. It check a lot of boxes!
