Early Seiko quartz watches of the 1970s, were without question, at the high end of the market. With exceptional accuracy, build quality and finishing, King Quartz were some of the best of their time. The 48xx series movements have a metal mainplate and jeweled train of wheels. There is even a jeweled seconds jumper that ensures the seconds hand lands squarely on it’s marker. On wrist the watch feels substantial, certainly on par with any mechanical watch. This particular example is the Gold Cap which is a different process than Gold Plated. The Cap or Jacket is a sheet of gold formed over the front face of the watch which is a steel base material. This process is visible from the back of the watch where the outer profile of gold and the steel meets. Gold cap has the appearance of solid gold but not the high cost or softness. The Dial and hands are in excellent condition and the crown is new old stock. The crystal is also new Sternkreuz high quality mineral glass. The watch strap is one of a kind, hand crafted leather.
This piece would be an excellent as a daily wearer as it has a day and day function. It could be worn to to the office or of course dressed up. While the gold finish is quite formal the shape is quite modern. Early Seiko Quartz, King especially are a bit thinker and bulkier than their mechanical counterparts, especially the monoque cases. This would be a good choice for someone with a larger wrist or or someone looking for a watch with strong wrist presence.
